No car, no parking pass, no packing the trunk. Leave the porch, and ten minutes on foot puts you on the sand at Beach Area 5, the quiet end of the world's longest freshwater beach. Door to sand, and the walk home after sunset is the best part.
14 km of sand in one sweep
Wasaga Beach is the longest freshwater beach in the world: 14 kilometres of sand in one unbroken sweep along Georgian Bay, protected as a provincial park. The water is famously shallow. Sandbars run out for hundreds of metres, so it warms fast and stays waist-deep long past where the kids want to go. Stay for the evening: the sun sets over the water here, with the Blue Mountains stacked on the horizon.

The shore is signposted into numbered beach areas, each with its own crowd and pace. Number 5 is our neighbour, ten minutes on foot; the others are a short bike ride away, with all the beaches connected by trails.
Beach Area 1
The main beach18 min bikeThe famous main beach, in the middle of a big glow-up. The old strip of shops and bars has been cleared while the beachfront is rebuilt (a new Marriott hotel and a whole new master plan are underway), so the sand is wider open than it has been in years. The beach itself is fully open and as good as ever; come for the swim and the people watching, and watch the new Wasaga take shape.

Beach Area 2
The family bay15 min bikeNext to the main strip and noticeably calmer: picnic shelters, a playground, and easy in-and-out for a half day with little kids.

Beach Area 3
The dog beach12 min bikeWhere the crowds thin out, and the only beach area where dogs are allowed on the sand. More towel room, the same warm shallows, and trees close enough for real shade at lunch. Bring the pup; this stretch is theirs.

The local stretch8 min bikeThe locals' stretch. A quieter neighbourhood beach with plenty of sand and rarely a lineup for anything.

Beach Area 5
Our beach10 min walkOur beach. The quiet end of the sand, a 10 minute walk from the porch: the widest views on the bay and the fewest people. The kids get a playground right by the sand, and new this year there is a beach store for snacks and drinks, so nobody has to walk home for a freezie. Bring chairs and stay for the sunset.

Beach Area 6
The far end10 min bikeThe very last stretch, out past number 5. The fewest cars on the bay and sand that feels almost private; a favourite for long sunset walks when you want the beach to yourselves.

Two live cameras look out over the shore: the boardwalk at Beach Area 2 and the sunset view from Beach Area 1. Check the crowd, the sky, and the water without leaving the porch.
Cameras provided by the Town of Wasaga Beach. They occasionally go offline for maintenance or when the view is blocked.

Know before you go
The sandbars are the magic: the water stays warm and waist-deep for a very long way out. Kids love it. Keep an eye on them anyway.
Sunset happens over the water. Pack chairs and stay past eight; the sun drops into the bay with the Blue Mountains behind it.
On hot, dry days the sand squeaks underfoot. It is a real thing. Listen for it.
Bringing the dog? Beach Area 3 is the only beach area where dogs are allowed on the sand. Everywhere it is a provincial park: carry out what you carry in.
